Passengers travelling from Dover must have their passports checked before they sail by French border staff.

A shortage of those staff coupled with the beginning of the school holidays created the perfect storm that led to people waiting up to seven hours in their cars.

A “critical incident” was declared, and a blame game was underway with the authorities in Dover adamant that the fault lay with the French.
