Unboxing the Huawei Nova 9, a mid-range smartphone boasting impressive pro camera tech, but hampered with a lack of Google Services. Here's my hands-on review of the Huawei Nova 9 optics, gaming prowess, media chops and other bits. Here in the UK you'll have to import, but is it worth it?

That camera is the main reason to snaffle this phone, offering impressive photo and video results to rival the Pixel 5a and other mid-rangers. You also get a gorgeous curved OLED screen, respectable gaming performance from the Snapdragon 778G smarts, and 66W fast charge support.

However, Android fans will be perturbed by the lack of Google Play action for downloading apps. Instead of Android you have Emotion UI, which as far as I can tell is basically Harmony OS these days. Likewise, the Huawei Nova 9 doesn't offer 5G connectivity, unlike most mid-range smartphones in 2021.

So, is this mobile worth a punt? That depends on how bad you want the camera, and how reliant you are on Google Services.
