As children, most of us were told that there were certain words that we just couldn't say. In this talk, Zachary Freer breaks down swear words: where they come from, how they are used, and why we find them so offensive. Perhaps bad words are not quite as bad as we have been led to believe.
Zachary Freer is a Junior at the American School of Barcelona. He first moved to Spain when he was 8 years old from New York City. Beyond interests such as debate, baseball, and chess, he has always been intrigued by swear words: where they come from, how they are used, and why we find them so offensive. In this Ted talk, he hopes to give the audience the very simple (and hopefully reasonable) message, that perhaps bad words are not as bad as we have been led to believe. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
