Strawberry fruits are grown worldwide. This fruit is widely appreciated for its unique aroma, bright red color, juicy texture and sweet taste. It is eaten in large quantities, whether fresh or made into pre-made foods such as jams, juices, pies, ice creams, milkshakes and chocolates.
Garden strawberries were first cultivated in Brittany, France in the 1750s. They were made by crossing Virginia strawberries from eastern North America with Chilean strawberries brought from Chile by Amédée-François Frézier in 1714.
