Please note:
-Figures are extrapolations based on available data.
-The 'city proper' definition is used in all cases, except Philadelphia, which was merged with Philadelphia County in 1854.
-New York was enlarged to include other cities in 1898, causing a sudden jump in population.
-Some cities that very briefly appear on the top five, such as Cleveland around 1920, are not shown.
