The bacteria Helicobacter Pylori can cleverly pass through the protective layer of gastric mucus on top of the stomach lining. They do this by secreting enzymes that degrade the mucus and disrupt the phospholipid layer at the epithelial cell surface, causing cell injury from back the diffusion of gastric acid.
