The battle for gender equality and women’s empowerment has been a life-long mission for award-winning Australian journalist Virginia Haussegger AM. But just when global rumblings of a 21st century backlash against women’s rights and freedoms began to erode hopes of progress, signs of a new dawn of feminist action have taken hold in Australia. Energised by a growing chorus of
young women chanting “Enough is Enough”, Virginia claims this is a moment of cultural reckoning: a moment to pause and listen, with both heart and head, as the work of feminism is far from finished. Virginia Haussegger AM is an award-winning journalist and women’s advocate whose extensive media career spans 30 years across commercial and public broadcasting, including 15 years as anchor of ABC TV News in Canberra. She is founding Director and former Chair of the 50/50 by 2030 Foundation, which she established at the University of Canberra in 2017, along with the media platform BroadAgenda. She currently hosts BroadTalk, a podcast about Women, Power and the wayward World. Virginia is widely published across Australian media, and writes a regular column for The Mandarin. She has served on numerous NFP boards and Advisory Committees and was named 2019 ACT Australian of the Year. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
