Why isn't Eastern Germany Religious?

Around the globe, Europe is generally heavily associated with the religion of Christianity, just as the Middle East is usually linked to Islam, and so on and so forth. The general assumption about European countries is that they are probably at least mostly populated by Christians, even if the nation itself hasn’t declared any official state religion.
