To determine the type of mass in the neck, after physical examination, we firstly use an ultrasound device. The scanner can reliably and efficiently produce rough but consistent images of the mass's location and dimension but a more detailed and precise result (more costly and more radiation as well) is acquired from the different angles of images produced by the CT scan.

Next, your doctor may need a tiny cellular sample using a FNAC from the diseased tissue to be examined under the microscope and will be needing tissue samples through core or open biopsy if the sample cells proved to be neoplastic.
